Here is some of the student work from this project!

Mona Lisa Cats.

I found this lesson on Deep Space Sparkle, but in summary, my 2nd and 3rd grade students learned about a Hispanic artist, Fernando Botero, for Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15). Botero loves to recreate famous paintings— such as the Mona Lisa— and play with their proportions. He tends to make the facial features smaller and the body bigger. I followed along to the lesson Deep Space Sparkle provided, however, I had the students choose an animal for their Mona Lisa. Their Mona Lisa could be a cat (following the lesson), a rabbit, a dog, etc. I also allowed the students to change up the Mona Lisa’s hair. Their hair could be wavy, straight, curly, etc. Having them choose which kind of hair they preferred for their Mona Lisa also allowed for us to review different types of lines.
